Notre Dame School of Manhattan is delighted to announce that we have been accepted for membership in the Anne de Xainctonge Foundation. The Anne de Xainctonge Foundation was envisioned and organized by Sr. Jacqueline Roblot, SU of the Sisters of St. Ursula of Dole, France. Sr. Jacqueline is a life-long educator in the tradition of Anne de Xainctonge, founder of the Sisters of St. Ursula in 1606. Sr. Jacqueline also served as the Superior General of the Sisters of St. Ursula of Dole and the President of the Federation of the Sisters of St. Ursula of Anne de Xainctonge, the organization of all of the Sisters of St. Ursula Congregations founded by Anne de Xainctonge. The sponsorship by the Anne de Xainctonge Foundation in no way affects the ownership of Notre Dame by our independent Board of Trustees.
The Anne de Xainctonge Foundation has canonical status in the Catholic Church which means that the Vatican recognizes the Foundation as a legitimate Catholic organization with the rights and responsibilities of an official Catholic organization. As a member now of the Foundation, Notre Dame is sponsored by the Foundation giving Notre Dame that same official recognition in the Catholic Church. Although Notre Dame always had that since its beginnings in 1912, since it was an unincorporated separate entity of the Sisters of St. Ursula, that designation shifted slightly after 1989 when the Sisters transferred ownership of Notre Dame to an independent Board of Trustees. Notre Dame School remained Catholic and was under the umbrella of the Bishops of the United States.
The Foundation gives us a St. Ursula “home” again and takes on the official recognition of our sponsor. We are the first non-French St. Ursula school to be accepted into the Foundation and we are very proud of that. We welcome the opportunities that will be available to us to collaborate with other St. Ursula schools abroad. Anne wanted her students to enjoy a faith-filled education leading to their development as fully human people who would live lives of service. Her mission inspires us to reach out to others, especially those in less resourced situations, and to always deepen our awareness of God and God’s love in our lives. A major inspiration for Anne’s mission was Ignatian Spirituality, and Notre Dame of today remains part of that spiritual tradition.
We will happily keep you informed of significant steps in our journey as members of the Anne de Xainctonge Foundation. Sharpen up your French! The website is in French and English! Fondation d’Anne de Xainctonge:
