ND Art Studio

The art studio and instruction room at Notre Dame is a recent addition to the building, and is situated on the top floor of the school. Funded by the Altman Foundation, the room accommodates 24 students, with workspace, display space, and storage cabinets. Work sink with backsplash is built-in, as well as air conditioning for the warmer months. A pair of sliding doors open onto the adjoining computer resource center. Three-panel windows fill the room with the beautiful northern light that artists desire.
The objectives of the 3-year program in fine arts for 9th, 10th and 12th grade students include consideration of art history, perception and appreciation, art criticism as well as art production. The program promotes creative thinking and production, and is highly disciplined without being rigid. Students present portfolios including artwork, essays and research. They are often asked to visit exhibitions of art around the city and write reflections about what they see. In this way, the art program takes advantage of the art that is all around us in New York City.
